In highly variable climates the temprature of a home can change rapidly. However, many people don’t tackle the problem before hand and often wait until the weather affects them so much that they are forced to deal with it.
A good way to prepare a home for a variable climate is to install an active heating and cooling system. While this may be necessary in certain climates, don’t rush to buy a heater or air conditioner unless it is absoloutely necessary.
It’s a good idea to consider how the home can be improved to make it more comfortable before purchasing expensive heating systems. Some homes are traditionally ‘leaky’ and draughts can be responsible for up to 25 per cent of heating costs, which is a similar amount if air conditioning is used.
Be sure that any leaks are fully sealed and also make use of curtains and blinds. Make the most of the sun’s heat and shading to moderate the home’s climate. If air-conditioning is needed, make sure to also have ceiling fans which will significantly increase its efficiency.
