Should you insulate your roller garage door?

We all know that insulation helps to regulate the temperature, but it also reduces your energy bills and acts as a buffer to prevent noise escaping from the room. That said, whether or not you should insulate your garage door depends on how you plan to use the space. For example, if it’s merely going to be a place to store your vehicle and hang a few coats, or perhaps store a few tools, then is it really going to be worthwhile to have your roller garage door insulated? Probably not. That said, if you garage joins onto your home, or if you plan to use the room as an office, bedroom or utility room, you wan to choose to have an insulated roller garage door, as this will help keep the space as warm and energy efficient as possible.

Some people worry whether insulating a garage door will make the space too hot in the summer months, but generally that’s not true. If anything it can help keep the space cool. So really you get dual benefits, a cosier space in the winter and a cooler space in the summer. That said, to really take advantage of the latest innovations in the garage door industry, and to add value to your home, we’d say go for it. It doesn’t cost a considerable amount more to add insulation, and actually, many manufacturer now provide insulated roller doors as standard, and they’ll even have their network of installers carry out the work, so you have absolutely nothing to worry about. With insulation, you also get a stronger door as a result. It’s true that insulated doors are often double or triple layered, as opposed to a standard one layer door. These layers provide extra security as well as more warmth, delivering a tougher barrier to protect against outside elements and any potential burglars.

So there you have, it with insulated roller doors you get less noise, more security, added warmth and reduced bills! But how does the insulation actually work and what are the properties? Polystyrene or polyurethane will typically be used as insulating material. Polystyrene is essentially a block of insulation, whilst polyurethane is an injected foam material that bonds to the garage door itself. The two make for a pretty effective insulator and are certainly well placed to handle the tricky British weather! The door’s construction is just as important as the insulation itself. A door with loose seals or joints will allow air to flow into the garage, and this will mean the space is no longer energy efficient. So it’s important to read reviews before deciding on a door or manufacturer that’s right for your home. Preparation is key, so before undertaking any garage door insulation project, you must address all factors to ensure durable, effective results.
